Supreme Court Clarifies: Justice Isa’s Wife Subjected to Airport Search, Addresses Circumstances

Airport Search

The Supreme Court has issued a clarification, emphasizing that Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa and his wife did not request exemption from airport searches. Instead, the court has urged the Ministry of Aviation to provide a full disclosure of the facts surrounding the matter.

In a letter addressed to the ministry, Shahid Kamboyo, the Public Relations Office of the Supreme Court, has requested the original letter written by the Supreme Court registrar regarding the removal of an anomaly related to airport search.

The registrar’s letter, dated September 21 (three days after Justice Isa took oath), highlighted that serving judges, retired judges, and their spouses were exempted from searches, but spouses of serving judges were not. The letter requested the ministry to address this anomaly.

The letter from PRO Kamboyo, dated Monday, further elaborates that Justice Isa opted not to use the VIP lounge and luxury limousine at the airport. It also stated that Justice Isa’s wife voluntarily entered a security cubicle and underwent a search conducted by a female officer. The letter mentioned that search exemption cards have not been received yet.

Additionally, the letter questions why the information about the exemptions was released to the media when Justice Isa left the country, even though the letter had been written on October 18.

The PRO pointed out that while the anomaly was resolved, there has been no explanation provided regarding the matter. The letter raised concerns about the government’s apparent lack of interest in addressing the security breach that led to the letter being revealed at an “interesting” time. Shortly after Justice Isa and his wife departed for a winter vacation, a notification from the Ministry of Aviation made headlines, stating that spouses of judges were exempt from body searches at all airports, as per the October 12 notification.
