Former Caretaker Interior Minister Sarfraz Bugti Joins PPP

Sarfraz Bugti

Former caretaker interior minister Sarfraz Bugti has made a significant political move by joining the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), just days after resigning from office—a necessary step for his intent to contest the upcoming general elections.

Addressing a PPP workers’ convention in Turbat, Bugti shared that his decision to join the party was influenced by PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari, who directed him during a visit to Turbat. Expressing his delight at aligning with the PPP for the upcoming elections, Bugti highlighted the importance of the party’s support in his political journey.

The general elections, scheduled for February 8, 2024, have faced speculation and concerns about potential delays. However, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) issued the polling schedule on Supreme Court orders, alleviating worries surrounding the election timeline.

Bugti, in his address, expressed hope for the restoration of peace in Balochistan under the leadership of Asif Ali Zardari. Advocating for improved healthcare facilities, he urged the former president to establish a state-of-the-art hospital in Turbat, similar to the one in Sukkur.

Making promises for the future, Bugti pledged to contribute to making the PPP a progressive party under Zardari’s leadership. He emphasized the PPP’s role in challenging narratives against Pakistan and positioned it as a force for positive change.

Before joining the PPP, Bugti had affiliations with the Balochistan Awami Party (BAP). Earlier reports had suggested that Bugti tendered his resignation to contest the upcoming general elections on the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) ticket, but his recent move to the PPP has shifted the political landscape and added a new dimension to his electoral aspirations.
