KARACHI/ISLAMABAD: In Karachi’s Lines area, a distressing event unfolded when individuals dressed in Sindh police attire reportedly abducted a student.
Adding to the alarming occurrence, these supposed Sindh police perpetrators demanded a ransom of $50,000 in bitcoins for the student’s release.
Kidnappers also sent a video of torture on the victim, to his family. The victim’s family promptly filed a case at the brigade police station in response.
According to the victim’s relatives, an inspector, accompanied by three other officers, was implicated in the abduction.
Concurrently, the authorities, in collaboration with an anti-violence unit, initiated an investigation into this grievous matter.
This incident echoes a recent robbery case in Karachi’s Gulshan-e-Maymar area, where individuals disguised in ‘police uniform’ burglarized multiple homes.
These imposters, posing as Sindh police personnel and accomplices in civilian clothing, entered residences and seized various items, including gold, jewelry, phones, and cash.
After raiding one home, the robbers, masquerading as police officers, targeted another property, taking both valuables and the recorded surveillance footage.
Upon receiving reports of these incidents, a collective team comprising crime scene investigators, police personnel, and rangers promptly arrived at the scene to conduct further inquiries.
ADB announces $658 million loan for Pakistan
Meanwhile, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved this week three projects totaling $658.8 million to help Pakistan achieve its goal of more inclusive and sustainable growth and development.
The projects will focus on improving domestic resource mobilization; rehabilitating schools damaged by the devastating August 2022 floods; and enhancing agricultural productivity to improve food security.
“This significant new wave of financing will help Pakistan recover from the impacts of last year’s cost-of-living crisis and super-floods and return to the path of long-term development that is sustainable and inclusive,” said ADB Director General for Central and West Asia Yevgeniy Zhukov. “This multifaceted approach is part of ADB’s strategic engagement in Pakistan and cohesively deploys our program lending and project investments to enhance support for Pakistan’s efforts to improve its economic situation and enhance the quality of life for its people.”
